Vocational Training Centre for the Deaf, Egypt
A Vocational Training Centre for the deaf is being built in 6th of October City, in the outskirts of Cairo. This centre will provide training for hearing-impaired young people in technical skills and life skills, enabling them to find jobs and become fully integrated in society.
It is estimated that there are over 2 million hearing-impaired people in Egypt. The number is so high due to poor living conditions, lack of health education, minimal health care in some areas, and inter-marriage.
Deaf children have limited educational opportunities, and many deaf young adults are illiterate. The unemployment rate for young adults is high, and the challenge of finding employment is compounded for deaf young adults. Public attitudes and a lack of awareness result in discrimination and deprives many deaf people the opportunity to be productive members of society.
Once established, 100 deaf young adults each year will have the opportunity for vocational training, giving them skills to be self-sufficient. These young adults will also have the opportunity to be involved with the established Deaf Club and Deaf Congregation at Jesus Light of the World Church in Old Cairo.
“I came to Egypt following the murder of my family by a warring faction in Sudan. When I arrived in Egypt, I was unable to find any work or opportunities until I arrived at the Deaf Unit. I worked hard to learn woodwork and sign language and upon doing so, I regained my independence and self-confidence. Through the Deaf Club, I met a young lady working at the school as a house mother and we are now married. Together we want to work alongside young deaf people, changing their attitudes and bringing them to the Lord. ”
